The Four O'Clock Line

Our field guide to shading a Northcliff ridge house: what the sun actually does to a view wall through the year, elevation by elevation, and which product beats which alternative here — with the trade-offs written down and the sources at the foot.

  • The sun path over the ridge, by season, with real angles
  • Which product we'd specify per elevation, and why — honestly, both ways
  • A two-minute ballpark tool, if you'd rather send rough sizes first

About 8 minutes to read. Free to everyone, whether or not you ever book a measure.

The Collection

Built for a house that faces the view

Every product below is made to measure per window, from a single bedroom opening to a full wall of glass looking out over the ridge.

Sunscreen roller blind lowered halfway over a home-office window, open-weave mesh softening bright daylight onto the desk

Sunscreen Rollers

3–5% openness mesh keeps the ridge view sharp while it cuts the glare and UV off the afternoon sun.

Explore
Blockout roller blind drawn fully down over a sliding door, holding a living room dark after sunset

Blockout Rollers

True dark for bedrooms on the view side, where the western sun doesn't let up until well past six.

Explore
Day and night blind on a kitchen window, banded fabric alternating solid and sheer stripes on a single roller

Day & Night Blinds

Banded fabric on one roller — line the solid stripes up for privacy, offset them and the ridge comes back. Where a room also needs true dark, we run a double roller instead: sunscreen and blockout on one bracket.

Explore
Aluminium venetian blind in a bedroom, horizontal slats tilted to throw soft morning light bars across the bed

Venetian Blinds — Aluminium & Timber

Tilt the slats as the sun swings around the ridge through the day — steer the light instead of losing the view.

Explore
Cellular honeycomb blind in close-up, showing the trapped-air hexagonal cells that insulate the glass

Cellular / Honeycomb Blinds

Trapped-air cells insulate both ways — useful on a ridge where the wind takes the warmth as fast as the sun brings it.

Made-to-pattern coverage for the arched, angled and skylight glass many ridge homes were designed around, where a standard roller can't reach.

Folding-Arm Patio Awnings

Shade for the deck that looks out over the ridge, wind-sensor protected against Highveld storms.

Zip Screens & Outdoor Shading

Wind-locked screens that turn an exposed ridge-top patio into a room you can actually use in the wind.

Roller Shutters

Sun, glare and full block-out in one motorised system — on a ridge that catches the worst of the afternoon sun and the odd Highveld hailstorm.

Shading, not security. Our roller shutters are made for sun, heat and glare control on the outside of the glass. They are not security-rated shutters — that is a different product, which we can quote on request.

Close-up of a timber venetian headrail and tilt mechanism, the hardware a blind repair usually turns on

Blind Repairs & Re-Fitting

Snapped chains and cords, tilters that have stopped biting, brackets pulled loose after a paint job, motors that no longer answer the remote — we'll look at it whoever originally fitted it. Where the mechanism is sound and parts are available, a repair is the sensible spend; where it isn't, we'll say so rather than charge you twice. Re-fits after a move or a renovation are the same visit.

The Ridge

Why Northcliff homes get specified differently

01

Built to face the view

Homes on the Northcliff ridge are oriented for the skyline, not away from the sun — the same glass that frames the view takes the full brunt of the afternoon light.

02

Altitude sun, not valley sun

At Johannesburg's altitude the UV load is real, and with no neighbouring hill to block the west sun, a ridge-top house gets it for longer than most suburbs do.

03

Highveld storms arrive from the ridge side

Summer hail and wind gusts hit exposed ridge properties hard. Anything left outside — an awning, an external venetian, a screen — needs to sense the wind and retract before the storm does the damage.

04

Old brick homes next to new glass boxes

Northcliff's mix of original 1970s–80s houses and architect-driven rebuilds means window sizes vary block to block. Every quote starts with an actual on-site measure, never a guess from a floor plan.

"The view is why people buy on the ridge. The blinds just have to let them keep it." — our approach to every Northcliff quote

The sun comes over the ridge, the slats close across it. That is the whole job.

Free in-home measure

A consultant measures every window on site, on the ridge, at a time that suits your household.

03

Written quote

An itemised, per-window quote — no pressure to accept it on the spot.

Questions

Straight answers before you book

Will sunscreen blinds actually keep the ridge view?
Yes — a 3–5% openness sunscreen mesh reads as close to see-through from inside. It cuts glare and UV hard while you can still see out over the ridge. The lower the percentage, the more it blocks, so it's worth judging fabric samples in your own light before deciding.
What actually fixes a west-facing view wall?
In order of effect: external shading (stops heat at the glass), sunscreen mesh inside (cuts glare and load while keeping the view), and motorised automation with a sun sensor so it happens on schedule whether you're home or not.
Do exterior awnings and screens survive a Highveld hailstorm?
Wind is the real risk, more than hail sitting still. We spec awnings and external screens with a wind sensor as standard, so they retract automatically before a gust or a storm reaches them.
Our house is an older Northcliff build — will standard sizes fit?
Not always. Older ridge homes often have non-standard steel-framed openings, which is exactly why every quote starts with an on-site measure rather than a guess from a floor plan.
Is motorisation worth it, or a gimmick?
On a single reachable window, it's a comfort upgrade. On a wide view wall or a run of stacking doors, it's the difference between blinds you actually use every day and blinds you give up on. Wind-sensored exterior products are closer to asset protection than luxury.
What does the quote cost?
Nothing. The measure, the fabric samples, the consultation and the written per-window quote are all free, with no obligation.
