Northcliff
About Northcliff Blinds: a measure-and-fit service for ridge houses
Northcliff Blinds measures, makes and fits window shading for houses built to face the view. Every blind, screen and external system is specified for the west-facing glass that comes with a ridge stand, and nothing is quoted from a floor plan.
Built around the view wall
Homes on the Northcliff ridge are oriented for the skyline, not away from the sun, so the same glass that frames the view takes the full brunt of the afternoon light. At Johannesburg's altitude the ultraviolet load is real, and with no neighbouring hill to block the west sun, a ridge-top house gets it for longer than most suburbs do. Highveld storms arrive from the ridge side between October and March, so anything left outside, whether an awning, an external venetian or a screen, needs to sense the wind and retract before the storm does the damage.
The housing stock is mixed rather than uniform: original face-brick homes from the seventies and eighties, many renovated with modern glass extensions, alongside architect-driven rebuilds. Two houses on the same street can carry two different generations of window, and forty-year-old steel-framed openings are rarely square. That is why every product here is built for one opening in one house, and why the external tier, external venetians, roller shutters and zip screens, is what we lead with on a hard west elevation: mounted outside the glass, it intercepts the four o'clock sun before it becomes heat inside the room.
What is made and fitted
Sunscreen and blockout rollers, day and night blinds, aluminium and timber venetians, cellular honeycomb blinds for cold south rooms, shaped and skylight blinds for the arched and angled glass many ridge homes were designed around, vertical and panel blinds for stacking doors, concealed and recessed systems for architect-renovated homes, external venetian blinds, folding-arm patio awnings, zip screens and outdoor shading, roller shutters as a shading product, and motorised automation with sun and wind sensors. Blind repairs and re-fitting are part of the service too, whoever fitted the original.
The ridge and the suburbs below it
Northcliff first, then the suburbs below and along the ridge. Blackheath, a leafy pocket close by with solid original homes on generous stands, many mid-renovation as owners open living areas up to the garden. Windsor, an established neighbour toward Randburg with brick family homes from the sixties to eighties and streets that run toward the ridge, picking up the same elevated western light. Fairland, family homes with big gardens, pools and patios built for entertaining, where the late sun is as much a patio problem as a living-room one and folding-arm awnings and zip screens come up constantly. And Weltevredenpark, further along the ridge system toward Roodepoort, with newer clusters, bigger open-plan glazing, and often a body corporate to consult on anything visible from outside.
Four steps, in order
The order never varies. An enquiry comes in through the form or the chat, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to book the free in-home measure. On the visit each opening is measured on site, both diagonals checked where the frames are old, a compass reading taken at the window, and fabric, weave and control chosen against the direction that glass actually faces. For anything motorised the route from a power point to the head of the window is walked, and on a deck the fixing height and wind exposure are judged standing on the paving.
A written quote follows, itemised window by window, with no phone call afterwards to push you. Pricing is confirmed in that document after the measure and nowhere before it; lead times are confirmed in the same written quote. Approve it and the work is manufactured to those sizes, fitted cleanly by the team that measured it, and run through with you before they leave, including charging routines on battery motors and sensor behaviour on anything exterior.
What this service does not do
It does not quote off a floor plan or a photograph, because older ridge openings are rarely square and nothing ready-made sits flush in one. It does not sell roller shutters as security: they hang on the outside of the glass and do one job, holding off the afternoon sun, heat and glare, and a security-rated product is a separate item we will quote on if asked. It does not claim a wind figure for the ridge crest that nobody has measured, and it does not fit compliance; if an extension adds view glass, how the shading counts is a question for your architect.
It does not push motors where they are not needed. On a single reachable window a motor is a comfort upgrade; on a wide view wall, a stair void or anything exterior it is the practical answer. And it does not offer products outside the range listed on this site.
Starting the conversation
Use the enquiry form on any page or the on-page chat. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange your free in-home measure and written per-window quote; the visit, the samples and the consultation cost nothing and carry no obligation. If you would rather start with the field guide, it is free and nothing is gated. Enquiry and chat details are used only to arrange your consultation call-back under POPIA and are never shared or sold, and if you tell us you are still researching, we will leave you be.
